The federal government has vowed to reform paedophile laws in a bid to keep child sex offenders behind bars for longer. If passed, abusers would find it harder to be granted bail or parole with the most serious criminals facing life in prison.

"It is unacceptable in this country that a child sex offender cannot go to jail but a victim of child sexual abuse ends up with a lifetime sentence" - Peter Dutton - Home Affairs Minister.

The number of reports of child exploitation doubled to more than 18,000 this year. 28% of convicted paedophiles didn't spend a day in jail with sentences averaging just 18 months.

The laws will also address online offending. With some online and overseas sex abuse cases falling outside state jurisdictions.
